Lighting design to BS EN 12464-1, emergency lighting to BS 5266, and feature lighting for retail and hospitality. Lux level calculations, control systems, and external lighting.
Good lighting design is not just about making a space bright enough; it is about meeting regulatory lux requirements while creating an environment that works for the people using it. Under-lit offices cause eye strain and reduce productivity.
Over-lit spaces waste energy and create an uncomfortable clinical atmosphere. The right design hits the sweet spot: compliant, comfortable, and efficient.
We design lighting schemes for offices, retail spaces, hospitality venues, educational facilities, and commercial buildings. Our designs are based on the lighting requirements set out in BS EN 12464-1, which specifies minimum maintained illuminance levels for different tasks and environments.
What We Cover
- Lux level design – calculating the number, type, and position of fittings needed to achieve the required illuminance. Offices require 500 lux on the working plane, retail typically 300 lux, circulation areas 100 lux. We use industry software to model the light distribution and ensure even coverage with no dark spots.
- Emergency lighting – design, installation, and certification to BS 5266. Emergency lighting must provide sufficient illumination for safe evacuation in a power failure. We design escape route lighting, anti-panic area lighting, and high-risk task area lighting as required by your premises.
- Feature and accent lighting – for retail displays, hospitality spaces, reception areas, and architectural features. This is where lighting becomes part of the brand experience rather than just a utility.
- Lighting control systems – PIR presence sensors that switch off lights in unoccupied rooms, daylight dimming that reduces artificial light when natural light is available, scene setting for meeting rooms and presentations, and time-clock controls for external lighting.
- External and car park lighting – column-mounted LED floodlights, bollard lights, wall-pack security lights, and photocell controls that switch external lighting on at dusk and off at dawn.
