MCS certified solar

Solar panels for Hampshire and Surrey homes

Solar PV panels convert sunlight into electricity you can use in your home, reducing what you buy from the grid and cutting your energy bills.

Hampshire and Surrey receive an average of 1,200–1,400 hours of sunshine per year, which is enough to make solar a worthwhile investment for most south-facing, east-facing, or west-facing roofs. A well-sized system on a suitable roof will typically generate 3,000–4,000 kWh of electricity per year, roughly 60–80% of a typical household's annual consumption.

We are MCS certified, which is a requirement for your installation to qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). Under the SEG, your energy supplier pays you for any surplus electricity you export back to the grid.

How it works

How solar PV works

Solar panels work in daylight, not just direct sunshine. They generate electricity on overcast days too, although less than on a bright sunny day. Output varies by season: a system will generate roughly three to four times more electricity in June than in December. The annual average over the full year is what matters for the financial return.

  1. 1

    Panels generate electricity

Solar panels generate DC (direct current) electricity when light hits the photovoltaic cells.

  2. 2

    The inverter converts it

An inverter converts this to AC (alternating current), the type of electricity your home uses. The system is connected to your consumer unit so the solar electricity feeds directly into your home's circuits.

  3. 3

    Surplus goes to the grid

When the panels are generating more than you are using, the surplus is exported to the grid. When they are generating less than you need, you draw the shortfall from the grid as normal.

System sizes

The right size for your roof and your home

We design each system based on your roof space, your electricity consumption, and your budget. We will recommend the right system size during the initial roof survey. There is no benefit in oversizing a system beyond what your roof can accommodate and what your household can use: a system that generates far more than you consume simply exports the surplus at a low rate.

  • Smaller homes

    3kW system

    8 panels

Suits smaller homes with limited roof space or lower electricity consumption.

    • Approx. 2,400–2,800 kWh per year in Hampshire
    • Covers roughly 50–60% of a typical household's annual electricity needs
  • Most popular

    4kW system

    10–11 panels

The most popular size for 3–4 bedroom homes.

    • Approx. 3,200–3,800 kWh per year
    • A good balance between generation, self-consumption, and cost
  • Larger homes

    6kW+ system

    15+ panels

For larger homes, households with high electricity consumption, or those planning to add an EV charger or heat pump.

    • 4,800–5,700 kWh per year or more
    • Requires a larger south-facing roof area

Battery storage

Use more of the power you generate

Without a battery, any solar electricity you generate but do not use immediately is exported to the grid. Under the Smart Export Guarantee you are paid for this export, but the rate (typically 4–6p per kWh) is much less than you would pay to buy the same electricity back from the grid (typically 24–30p per kWh).

A battery stores your surplus solar electricity so you can use it in the evening and overnight. This increases your self-consumption from a typical 30–40% (without battery) to 60–80% (with battery), which means you buy less from the grid and the financial return on your solar investment improves substantially. We install battery systems from GivEnergy, Tesla Powerwall, and Fox ESS.

  • Most frequently installed

    GivEnergy

Modular UK-designed systems with excellent app monitoring and smart tariff integration. Available in 2.6kWh modules that can be stacked for larger capacity.

  • Premium

    Tesla Powerwall

A premium product with a sleek design and excellent software. 13.5kWh usable capacity in a single unit, suitable for larger systems or households with high evening consumption.

  • Great value

    Fox ESS

A reliable, competitively priced option with good monitoring capabilities. A strong choice for budget-conscious installations without compromising on quality.

Solar and EV charging together

If you have an EV or are considering one, solar and EV charging make an excellent combination. A Zappi charger, which we install, can automatically use your surplus solar generation to charge your car during the day. This means you are charging your vehicle with free electricity from your roof rather than buying it from the grid.

For households that work from home or have a car parked on the driveway during daylight hours, the savings are substantial.
