Tripping breakers, dead sockets, flickering lights? We use specialist testing equipment to find the fault quickly and fix it properly. Most faults diagnosed within the first hour.
Electrical faults do not always announce themselves dramatically. Sometimes it is a socket that has stopped working, a light that flickers intermittently, or a circuit breaker that trips every few days for no obvious reason. Whatever the symptom, our job is to find the cause quickly and fix it properly – and to be honest with you about whether the fix is a simple repair or something more involved.
We bring specialist testing equipment to every job – insulation resistance testers, loop impedance testers, multifunction installation testers, and thermal imaging cameras for tracing hidden faults.
Most electrical faults follow logical patterns, and our experience means we can usually pinpoint the cause within the first hour.
Common Faults We Diagnose
These are the electrical faults we see most regularly across Hampshire and Surrey:
- Tripping breakers or RCDs – the single most common call we receive. Causes include faulty appliances (the most frequent culprit), moisture ingress to outdoor sockets or bathroom circuits, failing immersion heater elements, degraded cable insulation, and overloaded circuits. We test systematically to isolate the exact cause.
- Dead sockets or circuits – often a loose connection at a junction box, a failed MCB in the consumer unit, a damaged cable (especially if recent drilling or renovation work has been done nearby), or a tripped breaker that the homeowner has not noticed.
- Flickering lights – can indicate a loose connection at the light fitting, the switch, or a junction box in the circuit. LED lights can also flicker if the driver is failing or if the dimmer switch is not compatible with LED. Flickering across multiple lights on the same circuit suggests a loose connection at the consumer unit or a failing neutral connection.
- Intermittent power loss – one of the trickier faults to diagnose because the problem is not constant. Often caused by a loose connection that makes and breaks contact as metal components expand and contract with temperature changes. These faults typically get worse over time.
- Buzzing or humming from switches, sockets, or the fuseboard – usually caused by a loose terminal connection or a component that is vibrating under load. A buzzing consumer unit should be investigated promptly as it can indicate a loose busbar connection, which generates heat.
- Burning smell near sockets, light fittings, or the fuseboard – this is urgent. Switch off the affected circuit or the main switch and call us on 01252 265094. A burning smell means something is overheating, and the cause needs to be identified and fixed before the circuit is used again.
If you are not sure whether your problem is an emergency, call us on 01252 265094 and we will tell you honestly. We would rather save you the call-out fee and book a standard appointment than charge emergency rates for something non-urgent.
When a Fault Needs More Than a Repair
Sometimes what appears to be a simple fault is a symptom of a wider problem. If we find that your wiring is generally deteriorated, that the earthing is inadequate, or that the consumer unit is at the end of its life, we will tell you honestly.
We would rather have a slightly awkward conversation now than leave you with a bodge that fails again in six months. If a bigger job is needed, we will quote it separately so you can make an informed decision.
